Nov 22, 2008 Shelley Donohue

With so many free activities in Seattle for the holiday season it is easy to stick to a budget. This guide includes light shows, caroling concerts, and a ship parade.

Seattle, Washington is running over with Christmas spirit. Plan to make some memories with these fun holiday activities.

Candy Cane Lane

Candy Cane Lane is Seattle’s neighborhood light show. On Park Road Northeast, residents have been decorating their homes with glittering lights, jolly snowmen, and blinking reindeer since the 1940’s. Lights and holiday music run from 4:00 to 11:00 pm daily, starting after Thanksgiving and finishing on New Year’s Eve. They will stay on until midnight on Christmas Eve, Christmas and New Year’s Eve.

Westlake Tree Lighting Ceremony

This 20th Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony will take place on November 28th, with pre-show entertainment starting at 4:30 pm. Local choirs and musical groups will perform, while getting ready for the tree lighting to take place. To commemorate Westlake Center’s 20th anniversary, the first 5,000 attendees will receive a complimentary seedling tree, courtesy of PEMCO insurance. Maybe it will turn into a future Christmas tree? The Center is located at Westlake Plaza at 400 Pine Street in Seattle.

Argosy Christmas Ship Festival

The Argosy Christmas Ship Festival has been a Northwest Tradition for 59 years. Carolers wait around bonfires for the beautifully lit cruise ships to pull in to port. Speakers on board broadcast musical choirs for the crowds gathered onshore, or for those who purchase tickets to ride along on the ships. The Argosy Christmas Ship sails each night from November 29th through December 23rd.

Providence O’Christmas Trees

Tree viewing for the “A Family Affair Treeview” is free and open to the public on December 1st from 3:00 to 8:00 pm. This family friendly event includes kids craft activities, live entertainment and photos with Santa while enjoying the spectacular tree displays. Themes this year include The Twelve Days of Christmas, the Grinch, and The Night Before Christmas.

Great Figgy Pudding Street Corner Caroling Competition

Singers come from all around to compete in this fun event. With prizes such as “Get Figgy With It” and a People’s Choice Award, spectators can vote on their favorites. It is a blast to watch and hear the amazing voices of over 40 creative teams. Caroling will be held in Westlake Park at 401 Pine Street, in Seattle, beginning at 6:00 pm on December 5th. Viewing and listening is free to the public, with any donations benefiting Pike Market Senior Center and Downtown Food Bank.

Pike Place Magic in the Market

Celebrate the season with Pike Place Market starting at noon on Saturday, November 29th. Santa will be visiting in the market's vintage truck. Families are encouraged to bring their cameras to take pictures. Storefronts will be decorated festively for the season.

The Seattle Chamber Brass Quintet will be playing from 4:00 to 5:00 pm. A variety of holiday music will be played on trumpets, a French horn, a tuba, and a trombone.

At 5:00pm the tree will be lit as well as lights on the Market buildings.
